Ikaria is a Greek island and one of five ‘Blue Zones’ in the world. The island’s residents live well into their nineties and beyond with barely a sign of cancer, dementia or heart disease. The Blue Zones research was first published in National Geographic in 2005. The research team identified five locations around the world with high concentrations of people over 100, who lived healthy, happy lives right up until the end.
The Blue Zones include: Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica and finally, Ikaria, Greece.
This project traces the unhurried rhythms of Ikaria. It has been featured on The Washington Post, BBC, WhyNow, in addition to print publications including Hinterland magazine and Amateur Photographer magazine.
